Air Europa security breach exposes customer banking data

Air Europa is in the eye of the storm after confirming that it was the victim of a cyber attack that exposed its customers’ banking data on its online platform. Among the stolen information are credit card numbers, plastic expiration dates, and security codes.

The situation came to light after several users shared their experience on social networks. The company’s systems team confirmed the cybersecurity issue that affected the payment environment of its website, allowing the fraudulent extraction of banking data.

Air Europa reacted to the incident by implementing a security protocol to block the breach and prevent further data leakage. The company assures that, to date, all its systems operate with “total normality” and that the security of transactions is guaranteed.

Through an email, the airline contacted the affected customers, advising them to get in touch with their banking entities to cancel the compromised cards. Likewise, it provided a series of preventive measures to avoid possible fraudulent use of their information.

Among the recommendations are not to provide personal information by phone, message or email, and to report any unauthorized use of their cards to the competent authorities.

Financial sources emphasize that, although situations like this are not new, the notoriety of Air Europa has made the incident transcend more. Banking entities have activated their protocols for this type of situation, and are waiting to receive a list of the compromised cards from the payment services company Redsys, to proceed with the blocking of non-present payments and notify the affected customers.

The airline has expressed its apologies for the inconvenience caused and has made itself available to users for any type of advice. In addition, it reiterates its commitment to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future, and minimize any inconvenience that may arise from this incident.
