Spain: Aena airports closed July 8 points short of total passenger traffic recovery

Spain’s airport concessionaire Aena reported that during July its airports mobilized 27,067,913 passengers, representing a 92% recovery when compared to the same month of 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Of that total, 27,000,398 corresponded to commercial passengers, and in turn 18,245,175 belonged to the international flight segment: 12.3% less than in July 2019, and 8,755,223 to domestic flights, representing a growth of 2.6% compared to the pandemic.

In terms of aircraft movement, the network handled 230,542 operations, a 95.7% recovery over 2019 levels.

Meanwhile, Air cargo saw a 9.7% retraction compared to July 2019, with 79,906 tons of cargo handled.

«Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the seventh month of the year with 5,025,214, representing a decrease of 15.5% over July 2019.», Aena detailed.

«It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airports, with 4,431,648 (-17.3% compared to 2019); Palma de Mallorca, with 4,132,434 (-1.8%); Malaga-Costa del Sol, with 2,064. 856 (-7.3%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 1,519,739 passengers (-11.7%); Ibiza, 1,343,450 (+0.8%); and Gran Canaria, with 1,068,205 passengers, down 0.1% compared to the same month of 2019. «, they added.

Considering the number of air operations, «the airport that reached the highest number of movements in July was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 32,411 (-16.8% over 2019), followed by Palma de Mallorca, with 29,171 (+1.6%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with twenty-eight. 262 flights (-15%); Malaga-Costa del Sol, with 15,459 (-2.7%); Ibiza, with 13,138 (+7.3%); Gran Canaria, with 9,891 (-3%); and Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 9,785 movements, representing a decrease of 11.6% over the same month of 2019.»

And in terms of cargo, «the airport that recorded the highest cargo volume during July was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with 45,019 tons, down 3% compared to the same month of 2019. It was followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, which recorded 14,524 tons (-7.8% compared to 2019); Zaragoza, with 7,669 tons (-40.2%), and Vitoria, with 6,211 tons, which translates into 1.1% less than in the same month of 2019.»

With these numbers, the Aena airport network has accumulated between January and July 2022 a recovery of 83.9% of passenger traffic compared to the same period of 2019, with 132,007,150 passengers. Aircraft movement accumulated a recovery of 91.8% and cargo fell 2.5%.
