Airbus Acquires Aerovel, Strengthening Tactical UAS Offerings with Flexrotor

Airbus has recently completed its acquisition of the U.S.-based unmanned aerial system (UAS) company Aerovel, marking a significant expansion in its unmanned aviation capabilities. This strategic purchase includes the rights to Aerovel’s Flexrotor, a versatile unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions.

The Flexrotor, capable of vertical takeoff and landing, is particularly suited for maritime and terrestrial operations, thanks to its compact launch requirements and robust design. Weighing just 25 kg (55 lbs), it can operate autonomously for 12-14 hours, carrying a variety of payloads such as electro-optical systems and advanced sensors tailored to specific mission needs.

Mathilde Royer, Airbus Helicopters’ Head of Strategy and Sustainability, highlighted the growing global demand for unmanned systems capable of enhancing intelligence and surveillance for military and civil purposes. “The Flexrotor complements our existing UAS lineup and plays a critical role in our strategy to develop advanced manned-unmanned teaming capabilities,” said Royer. She added that such systems are essential for monitoring and protecting communities and critical infrastructure without putting manned aircraft at risk.

The acquisition will enable Airbus to further leverage the U.S. Department of Defense’s support, which has already seen the Flexrotor deployed in various maritime security operations. These missions have proven the UAV’s effectiveness in challenging environments, including GPS-denied areas, and its utility in diverse applications ranging from forest fire monitoring to ice navigation and border patrol.

Aerovel will continue to operate from its Bingen, Washington base, where it employs over 30 people, benefiting from a well-established UAS ecosystem. This setup ensures that Airbus not only gains a cutting-edge technology asset but also bolsters its presence in the tactical unmanned aviation market.
