Portland International Airport Opens New Terminal

Portland PDX Terminal

Portland International Airport has opened a new main terminal, which was built and designed by more than 30,000 artisans from the region, the new terminal doubles the capacity of the previous facility.

Our goal throughout the project has been: How do we reflect in the new PDX the pride and love we all have for the region? And that question has guided every decision. Working with local small businesses using local materials, filling the new PDX with local art and shops from our favorite neighborhoods, and of course bringing back the iconic carpet,” said Curtis Robinhold, Executive Director of the Port of Portland.

The entire new terminal also incorporates the region’s unique green spaces and landscape. There are many trees and plants, and soft daylight filters through the wooden ceiling, almost like light filtering through a forest canopy.

The improvements to the journey include not only making the spaces more comfortable and bright, but also technological upgrades. That means TSA checkpoints are larger and feature new (and more comfortable) equipment to make the screening process more efficient. Plus, passengers now check in at airline counters located on four “islands” to better accommodate future growth.

The $2.15 billion expansion is being completed in two phases. The next and final phase, which will include the construction of permanent lanes, a conference and reception area, and more local shops and restaurants, will begin on August 15 and be completed in early 2026.
